Below is a selection of the work I was proud of, and I hope it will give you the clearest picture I can give of the problems I take on, the scale I work at, and what I bring to them.

They span four very different settings: a national health network, an electric utility, a mapping company I built from scratch, and a county inspection unit. On the surface, they look completely unrelated. In practice, they faced the exact same challenge: data trapped in systems that couldn’t communicate, organizations pulling in opposite directions, and technology that was useless until those human problems were sorted out first.

In each story, I break down what the problem actually was on the ground, how I stepped in to fix it, and whether the system survived after I walked away.

Digital Health / Ethiopia

Strengthening Ethiopia’s National Digital Health Information Systems & Architecture

Challenge / Achievement

As Senior Digital Health Advisor at USAID/Ethiopia, I served as the senior adviser and senior digital health lead for USAID’s approximately $63 million Digital Health Activity, one of the country’s major donor-supported investments in national digital-health systems. My responsibility was considerably broader than providing technical advice on individual software platforms.

  • $63M Portfolio Oversight: Directed investment strategy, procurement review, and technical governance for the primary national digital health portfolio.

Energy & Infrastructure / Ethiopia

Building the Geospatial Foundation for a Modern Electric Utility

Challenge / Achievement

I supported the Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) company to modernize their data management for their network infrastructure. They had a major data fragmentation as well as data management challenges. For a large electric utility like EEU, GIS becomes valuable when it moves beyond mapping and becomes part of the operational information infrastructure connecting assets, customers, networks, field teams, enterprise systems, and executive decision-making.

  • Enterprise Systems Integration: Authored the integration blueprint connecting Enterprise GIS with core business systems, including ERP/SAP, SCADA networks, smart metering, and automated outage management workflows.

Built the First Ethiopian Digital Web Map — eAdrasha

Challenge / Achievement

Before my work became centered on national digital transformation, I founded eAdrasha to address the practical challenge of finding businesses, navigating informal addressing systems, and using reliable location information across Addis Ababa.

  • Ground-Truth Data Collection: Created an authoritative baseline urban dataset by hand-tagging 50,000+ micro-locations and 800+ landmark structures using open-source geospatial tools (Leaflet, OpenStreetMap).

Replacing a Paper Inspection Workflow with Mobile GIS

Challenge / Achievement

Inspectors were photographing a handwritten slip before every visit just to keep their photos organized, then spending hundreds of hours a year renaming files and assembling reports by hand. Reports lagged inspections by days, and some inspections were missed entirely.

  • ~50% Less Labour Time: Halved the time spent on inspections and reporting by replacing paper forms with mobile data capture.

  • Fully Paperless Workflow: Removed paper maps, handwritten photo slips, and manual report assembly from every inspection.

BizScope

Working out who a location can actually reach

Built and working, not yet launched

The Problem

Site selection normally draws a circle on a map — one kilometre, three, five — and counts the people inside it. Rivers, motorways, and one-way systems do not care about circles, and neither does a customer deciding whether the trip is worth making. The result is a catchment estimate that looks precise and is not.

What It Does Differently

BizScope replaces the circle with a travel-time polygon built from the actual road network, then counts who lives inside it: population, income, and how both have shifted over the years. It also counts how many competitors are already inside the same polygon, so a location that looks busy on paper can be recognised as saturated before anyone signs a lease.

Booking a pitch without making ten phone calls

Built and working, not yet launched

The Problem

Most urban sports fields are still booked by phone call or a messaging group. Double bookings are routine, off-peak hours sit empty because nobody knows they are free, and a player cannot see which nearby pitch is available tonight, what surface it has, or whether it has floodlights.

What It Does Differently

Enechawet puts every venue on a map ranked by how long it actually takes to get there, not how far away it looks. Selecting a slot locks it immediately for everyone else, so two people cannot claim the same hour while one of them is paying. Facility owners get their own view for pricing, availability, and walk-ins.
